Lakeview Wisconsin’s Bariatric Specialty in Obesity Treatment

Bariatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the treatment of obesity.  While many recognize the high rates of obesity and obesity-related health problems in the US population, Lakeview has focused on the risks and challenges of obesity among individuals with medically complexity, brain injury, developmental disabilities and other neurobehavioral disorders.  As a leader in the field, Lakeview’s full continuum of specialized, comprehensive bariatric services are delivered through a team-based, person-centered model.  Services include dedicated programs for children, adolescents and adults with obesity, from medically complex care in our hospital, to rehabilitation programs, and community integrated services in supported residences or through home health models.   Accessing safe, effective treatment for obesity is critical, as untreated obesity often results in  joint, hip and back problems; cancer; chronic pain; depression; type 2 diabetes; fatigue; gallstones; GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease; acid reflux disease); heart disease; high cholesterol; hypertension; insomnia; kidney disease; liver disease; osteoarthritis; pregnancy complications; restricted mobility; sleep apnea; social isolation; strokes; surgical complications; and urinary stress incontinence.

Lakeview’s Bariatric Program provides treatment at all levels, including pre- and post-operative bariatric surgical care, with hospital –based services such as advanced wound care, ventilator weaning, on-site pharmacy, lab, x-ray, endoscopy, bronchoscopy, dialysis, IV and PICC Lines, G-tube and parenteral feeding, and a broad range of board certified medical specialists.  The youth and adult residential programs have access to these on-site medical resources and our array of clinical services which include dietician, nursing, case management, occupational, physical, respiratory, speech-language and recreation therapies; along with a full behavioral health clinic utilizing neuropsychologists, psychotherapists and applied behavior analysts for individual, group and family counseling.   This unique program is founded in Lakeview’s roots as a rehabilitation provider, working holistically with the individual and their loved ones to achieve weight loss, health improvement, skill development, functional independence, enhanced quality of life and lasting life change.
